During this session, your Podiatrist will ask about the pain you're dealing with, and locate the source of the issue. The assessment does not focus solely on the foot; we also assess the knee, hip, pelvis and spine, and assess their relationship with one another. It is important to take a holistic approach when performing a biomechanical assessment, this is because a pain may be present in an area due to weakness or poor structural alignment in another. It's quite possible that the site of the problem is not necessarily where the cause originates; lower back pain, for example, can be the result of poor foot function.
They'll watch how you move while walking and take a close look at your gait, and how you load on the lower limbs. They might also need to check out your legs, feet, and lower back to get the full picture of what's going on. Once they've finished the assessment and figured out what’s causing the issue, they’ll explain the best way to treat it. We've outlined some of these possible solutions below:
Exercise plan
We are able to put together an exercise plan for you, which will be bespoke to your unique needs. These exercises are focused on correcting your movement, and in many cases may be enough to get you out of discomfort (you've got to do them, of course!)
Orthotics or insoles
To correct the function of your feet we may recommend an orthotics or insole. These are designed to help change the positioning and movements of the feet, which can help to relieve discomfort in the heels and knees. We stock a full range of these, and also take the time to modify these to your unique requirements.
Further referral
In a small number of cases, we might suggest that a broader approach is needed, and can support a referral to other health professionals. We work closely with the NHS and can work alongside them for a wider approach. We're also part of
Total Therapy Studios and therefore can connect with Physiotherapists and other movement specialists if clinically needed.
If you're dealing with pain in your back, legs, hips, or feet that's affecting your day-to-day life, a biomechanics assessment with your Podiatrist could help sort things out easily and quickly.
